The following opinions are not intended as medical advice. We always recommend talking to your doctor before starting a significantly different diet.

As a proponent of life balance, health, fitness and dietary wellness, we are always inquisitive and obsessive about results. So, when we hear people’s diets don’t seem to be working, we get really curious as to why or why not. The keto diet is a fascinating case study. There’s something incredibly elusive about the Ketogenic Diet. Despite its credible and popular reputation as an effective weight loss tool, it is difficult to qualify as a coherent means to an end. There is no shortage of eager endorsements of the Ketogenic Diet, granted, many of them are justified. For example, people do tend to lose weight while in a state of Ketosis.

There is also significant evidence to suggest that the Ketogenic Diet aids in the prevention of inflammation, and neurological ailments such as Alzheimer’s and Seizure Disorder. There are those for whom ketogenic dietary measures are medically beneficial. Some people claim to feel mentally sharp on the Diet, while others feel less hungry throughout the day. Whatever favourable observation one makes about the effect of his or her Ketogenic Diet, the question remains whether that individual correctly attributes those observations as being innate by-products of the Diet, or simply by-products circumstantial to the state of his or her pre-diet health. For instance, one will surely perceive feeling less hungry throughout the day as an improvement if that individual is used to consuming large quantities of processed foods. Who’s to say, though, that the reasonable response to this is the Ketogenic Diet? To make that simplistic conclusion about a solution to the state of one’s health might be to compensate for lost health, or provoke worse health.

Implied in the above argument is the philosophy of taking a holistic approach to health. While diets can be quite effective in mediating consumption to a specific end, they tend not to emphasize an integrated idea about health that encourages equilibrium across the body. That value system maximizes potential without needing to compensate. Ketosis, for instance, helps people lose weight by depriving the body of carbohydrates which, in turn, forces the metabolic system to use Fats as a primary source of energy. Carbohydrates facilitate a unique and essential form of ATP energy production within a cell. The body has evolved dependable and adaptive systems specific to that process. So, while Ketosis offers an alternate means of ATP production, its means of doing so isn’t optimally compatible with the cell, therefore creating molecular by-products that might compromise the integrity of that cell.
Depriving the body of nutritious carbohydrates probably isn’t always the choicest best option considering the integral role it plays in cellular health.

If an individual wants to learn more about how much carbohydrates their body needs, it might be beneficial to moderate macronutrient consumption. Tracking macronutrients will both increase productivity while helping to maintain vital systems in the body. Learning why carbohydrates, fats and proteins are important is helpful if an individual is tracking macronutrients. It is also important to understand which types of macronutrients are suboptimal, such as processed foods. Moreover, there’s no standardized model for health because it’s disparate for each person.

Diets tend to seek a unilateral outcome, and sometimes achieve unpredictable results. By tracking macronutrients, individuals can take an active role in personal health that takes more into consideration, and meets a more predictable, holistic end. Regardless, what is understood is that the process of achieving optimal health is dependent upon maximizing potential by consuming sufficient nutrients to meet physiological requirements without need for compensation. Cells are their own ecosystems, comprised of components that have requisite means of functionality. Such is the human body, which requires adequate exercise, sleep, and nutrients to achieve healthy equilibrium. Bottom line, look before you leap. Consider the role diets play in your health holistic, and do your research.

“When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind not with it” – Henry Ford

This is a great quote as it refreshes your mind that resistance and adversity are needed to achieve great things and “take-off”. If you aren’t having any adversity maybe you aren’t getting out of your comfort zone enough and should go looking for some!

We have heard all the quotes around this topic but it is true that you learn so much more about yourself and your business when you go through tough times and have to battle. You gain a whole new set of tools in the tool chest and sharpen the skills needed to survive. Certainly it can suck when you are in the middle of the shit but if you trust the process there are good things awaiting you on the other side of adversity.

We have closed down locations, laid off employees and been on life support but always kept putting one foot ahead of the other and simply kept moving. Stop moving and you die. Keep moving forward and chunk things down, eat that damn elephant one bite at a time. You are a winner, you will get there and you will inspire others through your journey.

Take care of your body during the rough times by staying active and eating well. Your body and mind are the foundation that will get you through these times so make them priority number one. Add in some passion, excitement and gratitude to fuel the fire and you will be ready to ride the toughest of waves.

See you on the other side of your challenges!

It has been a few weeks since my last post about implementing the actions behind my acronym P.O.W.E.R..
Last time I talked about Planning and this time it is the letter “O” for Own It.

Over the past 12+ months of COVID restrictions and lockdowns, we have all had so much time in our own heads. At least it seems to me like more and more of my friends are engaging in meditation, journaling, listening to audiobooks and podcasts or practicing other means of mindfulness.

If you are like me there is much reflection of how I got to this point of my life and an even greater amount of thought to where I am going. The one thing is for sure; I 100% own the journey to date and the road ahead.

No matter what it is we decide we are going to adopt or change moving forward, it is up to us to do the work and show up. It is important to own our stuff, good or bad and realize that it is the person in the mirror that we are accountable to. It isn’t going to come from your friend or partner or a motivational video or a blog.

If we have done our planning well and established smaller habits and bite sized actions to get momentum, owning the experience is certainly easier. The wellness journey is a collection of daily decisions that are all aligned to deliver your desired result. If we can get the first few big ones done, the remaining actions fall in place as they are congruent with the earlier empowering decisions you have made.

Cyclist having healthy meal wearing a helmetAt the end of the day we own our attitude and our actions (or inaction), it is a personal decision how we show up. I am always amazed at the degree of personal power we all have. If we put our minds to something the sky can truly be the limit. When we accept this and take ownership it makes our growth mindset so much simpler.

WHAT CAN WE DO:

  • Implement a growth mindset
  • Hold yourself accountable to your objectives and commitments
  • Re-set your objectives as you achieve them
  • Take control of your day from the start
  • Get out of your comfort zone daily
  • Be proud of achieving even the smallest goals

I have been thinking a lot lately about the P.O.W.E.R of personal decision as it pertains to feeling great. The wellness cocktail so to speak, that can help people maximize their energy, mindset and productivity.

Power of Positivity Eating Well

Fit Kitchen has been touching more peoples lives than ever over the past six months and it got me thinking about why. Strangely this shouldn’t have been too difficult given why I started the business in the first place!

Anyway, so I stopped thinking about if it was Google ads or social media or an influencer or my amazing workout posts …. Ha-ha. Funny thing is that when you start “playing business” you can lose track of the driving WHY that led to the passion to start the business and send it out into the world. And the WHY often comes from some unmet need that you experience personally and then figure out that there are others that probably are dealing with the same frustration.

In my case over 16 years ago it was the fact that healthy convenient eating options were very hard to come by but yet we could all get crappy fast food just about anywhere. Why couldn’t a healthy beef stir fry be as accessible as a Big Mac and fries?

Fit Kitchen healthy meal prep container with a balanced meal.So back to my original thoughts, I think more people than ever right now understand the simple importance of feeling great physically and mentally. More importantly I believe that more people are understanding that food and how we eat plays a massive role in how we feel and how we feel about ourselves. It is the foundation of so many things along with regular activity but those in the know say diet is 80% of that formula.

When we get up, feel great and are ready to take on the day ….man that is a grateful moment, it is a blessing! We all have been through times when we don’t feel great and certainly know stories of what life can be like when someone has their health taken from them. We should be treating our bodies like a high-performance machine because it is. Many people take better care of their cars or possessions than they do themselves.

When people want to feel better, they are willing to take action, embrace new habits and chase goals and objectives. This just isn’t about meal replacement or convenient delivery of any food; this is about changing the way you think about food and committing to having food tailored to what you need to achieve your results!

Boom this is what we are all about at Fit Kitchen and have been since day 1. We are passionate about enhancing peoples lives through healthy food. We are your partner in achieving your goals and that is why we have so many great stories and relationships from helping clients be there best selves.

So, the answer has been staring me straight in the face all along and we just keep doubling down on our original promise and vision helping you “eat fit and feel great!”

Ask yourself what might you be overthinking in your business? Many times, there are more straight lines to success than we realize, and we get in our own way by overcomplicating. Look for your straight lines!

When asked the question sometimes people don’t know what to answer but indeed we have a price. Whether we realize it or not we are always calculating the value of our time. Either we know how much we get paid an hour or we have calculated our salary into an hours for dollars, we all have done the math.

In our lives we are doing this all the time as well. When someone shovels your driveway or mows your lawn for $25 hour we are doing the calculation. Same goes for tax prep, car detailing, maid services, dry cleaning etc. we are asking ourselves what we could be doing with that time by paying someone to do the work? If we can turn that free time into making you $50 hour we have just created $25 an hour. Or better yet lets use that free time on ACTIVITIES, FITNESS, PERSONAL CARE, HOBBIES or with LOVED ONES or FRIENDS. Time is a precious finite commodity that we will never get more of so we have to be judicious on how we use it.

Graphical representation of relation between time and moneyI heard someone say – do what you do best and delegate the rest! If we aim to maximize our time and focus for business and quality of life we need to prioritize our time.

This makes me think back to why we started The Main Dish and eventually Fit Kitchen. When we started these businesses I was passionate about more than selling healthy food, I was excited to give Calgarians the opportunity to eat well and at the same time BUY BACK SOME TIME. Our company goal was and remains;

To enhance the quality of peoples lives through healthy convenient eating solutions.

We want to be your partner in creating a healthy sustainable lifestyle.
